Active Power Receives Turnkey Order From Leader in Business-to-Business Express Delivery Services

AUSTIN, Texas, June 20 /PRNewswire/ --

-- Battery-Free UPS and Generator Power Solution Chosen to Supplement Existing Power Backup Infrastructure

Active Power, Inc. (Nasdaq: ACPW) today announced an order from TNT Express ICS for a 1650kVA turnkey power system that includes UPS, generator, switchgear and related components, services and installation. The system will be shipped and installed in Q2 and will be used to provide increased power protection for TNT Express ICS's Worldwide Data Centre in Atherstone, Warwickshire, UK.

Design Consultants Preston Lee Chambers, using considerable planning and system experience, took the lead on a complex infrastructure upgrade. Not only reliable power, but a "state-of-the-art" in-rack cooling system needed to be integrated into a 24/7 working environment. Kevin Preston of PLC commented, "The demands of Blade Server Technology have pushed the envelope of traditional design methods. We needed to work with companies who appreciated timescale and functional demands; Active Power being one of these provided a 'Blade Ready' continuous power system, matching our requirements perfectly."

The power modules outlined above will be incorporated into an Active Power designed and supplied "super-silent" containerized plant room. The plant room will house specialized equipment for increasing power availability, redundant UPS, cooling and controls together with Active Power's very own GenSTART technology, which provides redundant starting power for the generator, significantly increasing system availability.

TNT Express ICS is part of TNT N.V. It is a global provider of mail, express and logistics services. The group employs over 161,000 people in 63 countries and serves over 200 countries. For 2005 the company reported sales of euro 13.6 billion. TNT N.V. is publicly listed on the stock exchanges of Amsterdam, New York, and Frankfurt. The TNT N.V. website is: http://www.tnt.com .

"We chose Active Power due not only to their ability to provide the highest level of power protection in the smallest footprint, but also for their ability to achieve a complex installation and comfortably perform to a demanding project timescale," said Derek Liggins, Data Centre Services Manager of TNT Express ICS. "The equipment offers exceptional levels of operating efficiency and achieves redundancy in a fraction of the space compared to rotary systems we have used. This system will protect our centralized servers, which are critical to our business, as well as complementing TNT's Corporate Social Responsibility policy and ICS's installation ISO14001 standard. We needed to increase the capacity of our power infrastructure, and the power density of Active Power's flywheel-based UPS systems has allowed us to achieve full N+N system resilience where we thought N+1 was only possible."

Active Power's battery-free CleanSource(R) UPS products offer customers several advantages over traditional battery-based systems including lower total cost, higher reliability, smaller footprint, higher efficiency, longer life and lower maintenance.

"This order highlights the multi-faceted advantages of power dense battery-free solutions from Active Power, as well as the strong commitment in Europe to adopting green technologies," said Jim Clishem, CEO and President of Active Power. "Additionally, this significant win validates the strength that our newly formed European sales and support team brings to the market, which makes Active Power a truly global power quality solutions provider."
