Johnson Controls Demonstrates Freedom in Cockpit Design

BURSCHEID, Germany, September 13 /PRNewswire/ --

-- Driver Information System of Tomorrow

How might cockpits look in the near future? The answer can be found in a prototype from Johnson Controls, one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive interior systems, electronics and batteries. It will be presented at the International Motor Show 2007 to demonstrate current cockpit trends that offer drivers and passengers a high degree of usability. Innovative driver information systems and a new passenger display play a special role in this cockpit prototype.

"Our concept utilizes a real cockpit to demonstrate the driver information systems of tomorrow. With these systems, we are providing cost-effective solutions with innovative technology, selected materials, and a harmonized choice of colors," said Thomas Patzelt, Vice President and General Manager Electronics Division Europe.

Ring pointer for better vision

A core element of the instrument cluster is an innovative ring pointer for indicating speed. The sophisticated mechanical design weighs less and is more cost-effective than conventional solutions. It also eliminates the pointer's central hub cover which is necessary in conventional designs. This allows the center area of the speedometer to be used to display other driver aids without any visual obstruction.

In terms of design freedom, the central information display is setting new standards. Due to its frameless integration, new surface forms can be used in the display area for the first time. The typical right-angled display area is scattered with lateral placed LED-backlighted symbols and offers completely new possibilities in interior design.

Individual information for the passenger

The passenger also is provided with individual information in this car of the near future. Johnson Controls is setting the trend in passenger displays by integrating a high-resolution color TFT display. The additional LED-backlighted symbols at the sides makes the display appear large and gives it a creative edge. The concept is available for the middle segment up to the luxury segment.

"We have integrated these innovations into a cockpit to allow our customers to get a better idea of the product in its actual environ-ment," said Thomas Patzelt. However, all product solutions are also available separately."
