Another year the harvest of cava grapes has started in the different locations that form the Cava D.O. The fruit that 6,365 growers have cared of for months in the 32,913 hectares used as vineyards for cava will be gathered. Thanks to this sparkling wine we can talk of a sustainable economy not only due to the 11,000 jobs directly created by this industry, but for more of 2,000 additional workers employed during the harvest and pruning season.
To talk about sustainability is also to talk about environment, and these two concepts are in the core of the cava industry. Every day is clearer that the cava industry fully complies to quality standards. We use traditional techniques for vine growing, as well as ecological, biodynamic and mixed techniques in order to produce a grape that, with the appropriate time of aging, will become a great quality cava. This year production is expected to reach 315 million kilos, between 15 and 18 percent less than in 2013. The major areas for vine growing are the traditional regions of Penedès (19,477 hectares), Conca de Barberà (2,851 hectares) and Alt Camp i Tarragonès (4,863 hectares). Currently, 96% of grapes harvested in these areas are devoted to the production of cava.
