Pixar no es únicamente una factoría de genios que han "parido" algunas de las mejores películas de animación de la historia, como Toy Story o Up. Ya desde sus inicios como una división de LucasFilm (denominada The Graphics Group) fueron pioneros en animación digital y poco después de emanciparse, crearon Motion Doctor, que permitía trabajar a animadores tradicionales sin experiencia con ordenadores.
Motion Doctor fue el origen de RenderMan, el motor de animación de Pixar que ha dado vida a sus geniales producciones. Sin embargo, no solo sus películas se han movido gracias a RenderMan, puesto que Pixar lo ha licenciado para su uso en decenas y decenas de largometrajes desde 1984. Hay algunas tan populares como The Abyss, Terminator 2, Parque Jurásico, Matrix, la moderna trilogía de Star Wars, King Kong, Transformers o X-Men.
Y seguramente en el futuro veremos RenderMan en muchas más producciones, puesto que Pixar acaba de rebajar el precio de la licencia comercial y ha ofrecido la herramientra gratis para usos no comerciales.
